Quantum Mechanics, Buddhism and Projects

by Rolf Goetz

Every once in a while I run into fellow requirements engineers who seem to ignore the fact that the holy project objectives trinity of Time, Budget, and Scope is all about interrelated, inseparable ideas. Why are they ignorant? After I heard about recent insights from quantum mechanics, an explaining theory formed in my head. I will add a little cognitive science and Buddhism to support my argument.

Conclusion: people might have a mental model too simple for covering the actual interrelation present.

slightly different interpretation

The way I've always interpreted statements such as "pick any two" is not that they exclude portions of the process, but rather that the process is so complex that full understanding is only reached after considering the various perspectives in pairs.

What you then wind up with is a series of smaller relationships which, when taken as a whole, give the full picture. In this way, not only do you find the effects of adjusting one portion of the set, say time, on the rest of the known variables, you discover missing variables/relationships when something happens for which you've not accounted.

Overall, same idea as yours, though with a slightly different twist.
